Charity and Kathleen Lincoln were born on February 21, 2000, in Seattle, connected from chest to pelvis. They had two torsos but shared vital organs — liver, intestines, and pelvic organs — and even had a third underdeveloped leg neither could use.
Doctors knew separation was the only chance for a normal life, but the operation was extremely risky, especially for infants so young. At seven months old, a team of 30 specialists at Seattle Children’s Hospital performed a 31-hour surgery, carefully separating organs, redistributing tissues, and giving each twin one leg and a separate intestinal tract.
The surgery was a success, and both girls survived. Recovery was long and challenging, with numerous rehab procedures and constant parental care. Yet, despite these hardships, the sisters gradually adapted, attended school, and built lives that defied the odds.
