Our lakeside wedding began like a dream — sunlight on the water, flowers swaying in the breeze, and my mom, Donna, radiant in her soft blue dress. She had helped plan every detail, making the day feel truly special. But my mother-in-law, Karen, couldn’t stand sharing the spotlight. From the start, she made sharp little comments and wore a white dress as if daring me to react.
During the photo session by the lake, my mom stood beside me, fixing my veil with her usual gentle touch. Karen’s voice cut through the air: “Careful, Donna, the ground looks muddy!” It sounded more mocking than kind. Then, in an instant, she reached forward — and my mom stumbled straight into the mud. Gasps rippled through the crowd. Karen clutched her pearls, feigning shock. “Oh no, Donna! You really should be more careful!” she said, her smirk betraying her.
My mom tried to laugh it off, her dress ruined and her hands trembling. I stood frozen, realizing Karen had done it on purpose. That’s when Ben’s father, Tom, quietly stepped forward. His voice, usually calm and reserved, carried a new weight as he said, “Everyone, please take a good look at Karen.”
