Biden’s fiery remarks came amid renewed public attention to his own health. In May, the White House confirmed that the president had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer, with a Gleason score of 9 and signs of metastasis to the bone.
After completing radiation therapy, Biden publicly thanked his doctors and reflected on the importance of affordable healthcare.
“I thank God for the doctors, nurses, and the breakthroughs we’re seeing in cancer research,” he said.
The president used his recovery as a springboard to contrast his healthcare policies with those of his predecessor.
“Now Trump and his Republican friends are cutting government funding for healthcare and making it more expensive for virtually everyone,” Biden warned.
Framing his remarks around personal experience, Biden urged Americans to protect access to care for families across the nation.
“Every American deserves a fighting chance — in health, in opportunity, and in life,” he concluded.
