Councilwoman Resigns After Offensive Facebook Comment

In Norman, Oklahoma, political tensions spilled out of city hall and onto social media — and the fallout has now cost one councilwoman her seat.
Bree Montoya, who had represented Ward 3 since last year, officially stepped down during a city council meeting on September 23. Her resignation came after months of criticism over comments she made in a heated Facebook exchange with a supporter of former President Donald Trump.
The controversy began in June during an online debate about the size of a local “No Kings” protest, held nationwide to oppose Trump’s administration and coincide with the Army’s 250th anniversary parade.
During the exchange, Montoya told Norman resident Audra Abbott to “open a vein,” adding: “Go on, put a gun in your mouth and pull the trigger.” Screenshots circulated widely after conservative activists resurfaced them later that summer.
Abbott expressed shock at the comments, telling local outlet KOKH, “I can’t believe an elected official would talk like that online.”
Montoya later issued a public apology on her official council Facebook page, saying, “I was immediately disgusted with myself and knew I had crossed an unimaginable line. To those I’ve hurt and are disappointed in me, I am truly sorry. I humbly ask your forgiveness.”
