A nationwide redistricting battle is gaining momentum, largely fueled by former President Donald Trump’s calls for Republican-led legislatures to secure more GOP-leaning congressional districts ahead of the 2026 midterms.
In North Carolina, lawmakers are advancing a new congressional map that could reshape political power across the state. The proposed plan would give Republicans an advantage in 11 of the state’s 14 House seats, up from the current 10 — effectively targeting the district held by Democratic Rep. Don Davis.
If the measure is approved, it would mark the seventh newly drawn GOP-favored district nationwide this year.
State Sen. Ralph Hise, a Republican overseeing the process, described the motivation behind the move as “simple and singular” — to secure an additional Republican seat and strengthen Trump’s legislative agenda.
The new map cleared the North Carolina Senate despite Democratic opposition and public protests at the Raleigh Capitol. It now heads to the state House for final consideration. Democratic Gov. Josh Stein cannot veto redistricting legislation under state law.
