The flight was quiet. I barely touched the food or the drinks, lost in thoughts of Claire. When the plane finally touched down, I just wanted to slip out unnoticed.
Then, the captain’s voice came over the speakers — calm, steady… familiar. My heart stopped.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” he said, “before you leave, I want to introduce someone special — my father-in-law, the man who raised the love of my life, Claire.”
It was Mark. My son-in-law.
The cabin went silent, and then… applause erupted. People stood, clapping, some even crying. The same passengers who had judged me moments earlier were now looking at me with respect — maybe even regret.
For the first time since losing Claire, I didn’t feel invisible. I felt seen. Loved. And somehow, a little bit healed.
