The Truth That Melted My Heart
When the woman heard why I was concerned, she suddenly began to laugh — tears in her eyes.
“I’m so sorry,” she said between giggles. “My daughter’s just curious about everything. We live nearby and often walk down your street. Every time she sees your house, she says, ‘I want to say hello to that lady!’ So she runs up, rings the bell, and comes right back. I’m always waiting by the gate.”
I was stunned. Then I asked, “But… why my house?”
Her smile softened. “You might not remember, but last summer you gave her an apple after she fell and scraped her knee. Since then, she’s believed she should come by every day to wish you a good day.”
The police officer and I exchanged smiles — both relieved and deeply moved.
In the end, the mysterious visitor wasn’t lost, lonely, or in trouble. She was simply a grateful little girl returning a small act of kindness in her own innocent way.
Sometimes, the gentlest gestures leave the deepest marks — especially on the heart of a child.
