When Sergeant Daniel Carter returned home after three years overseas, he expected a warm welcome — not heartbreak.

On his porch, he found his 9-year-old son, Noah, asleep in the cold, clutching a tiny wooden key they’d carved together before he left.

“Noah… is it really you?” he whispered.
“Mom said to wait for Uncle Ethan,” Noah murmured. “But he never came back.”

Daniel’s heart shattered. That night, he took his son to his old cabin outside Oak Creek. It was small and quiet — but safe.

“Who hurt you?” he asked one night.
