I never thought I’d find my 86-year-old granddad standing outside his own home like a stranger.
A battered suitcase at his feet, two trash bags beside him, and a tiny puppy with a cast shivering in the cold.
“Granddad, what’s going on?” I asked, my chest tightening.
He looked up with tired eyes. “Linda said the dog ruins the house value,” he whispered. “She told me to leave if I didn’t get rid of her.”
Linda—my stepmother—had always been obsessed with appearances. But this? This was cruel even for her.
Granddad had endured her sharp words and quiet dismissals since Grandma died. He never complained. Never pushed back.
Until Penny came along—the little puppy he’d rescued from a storm drain.
