Gunfire Erupts Near Howard University During Homecoming Festivities

WASHINGTON, D.C. — What began as a night of celebration turned into chaos late Friday near Howard University, when gunfire erupted just steps from the school’s bustling homecoming events.

Police say at least four people were shot around 10:30 p.m. in the 2300 block of Georgia Avenue NW, a stretch crowded with students, alumni, and visitors enjoying one of D.C.’s most anticipated annual college gatherings.

Authorities confirmed that four victims were taken to local hospitals — one remains in critical condition, another in serious condition, and two others are expected to recover.

Witnesses described a sudden burst of gunfire and panic as people ran for safety while officers flooded the scene.

“We were just dancing, and then everyone started screaming,” said one student. “It felt like chaos in seconds.”

The incident unfolded near, but not directly within, official university-sponsored events. Police believe it may have stemmed from an off-campus gathering connected to the celebrations.
