A Baseball Family Mourns Together
Just days before Sterling’s passing, on October 23, the Dodgers had released a short statement on X (formerly Twitter):
“It’s with a heavy heart that we share that Alex Vesia is away from the team as he and his wife Kayla navigate a deeply personal family matter. The entire Dodgers organization is sending our thoughts to the Vesia family.”
Manager Dave Roberts confirmed that Vesia would miss the start of the World Series, emphasizing the team’s respect for the family’s privacy.
Dodgers’ president Andrew Friedman echoed that sentiment, explaining that the organization immediately prioritized Alex’s well-being over baseball.
“This is so much bigger than baseball,” Friedman said. “And for us, it was doing whatever small part we could to just 100% be supportive.”
The Vesias had joyfully announced their pregnancy in April 2025, a moment of light in what would become a challenging season for the Dodgers’ bullpen. Now, their loss has united teammates, fans, and even rival organizations in shared grief.
Across social media, thousands of messages poured in from Dodger Nation, the Blue Jays organization, and the wider baseball community — each one offering love, prayers, and condolences.
In a season filled with highs and lows, one message from the Dodgers stood out above all: family comes first.
