Chilling position missing 4-year-old boy’s body was found in with dog by his side

In a tragic conclusion to a New Year’s Eve mystery, authorities have recovered the body of four-year-old Jonathan Everett Boley, ending a desperate three-day search that mobilized hundreds through the rugged terrain of rural Alabama. Affectionately known to his family as “John-John,” the young boy vanished on the morning of December 31 while playing outside his father’s property in the 7000 block of Highway 195, near Jasper. In a detail that underscores the heartbreaking nature of the case, the child was discovered on January 2 alongside his loyal companion, Buck, the family’s black Labrador retriever.

The Search and Discovery

The alarm was first raised after Johnathan reportedly wandered across a fence line while following Buck into the woods. The subsequent search effort was a massive undertaking, involving more than 120 first responders and 160 volunteers who combed over 500 acres of dense, wooded land using K-9 teams, drones with thermal imaging, and aerial support.

On Friday, January 2, a volunteer search team made the grim discovery in a wooded area approximately two miles from the father’s residence. Buck was found alive, reportedly waiting faithfully by Johnathan’s body, which was located in a creek.

Walker County Sheriff Nick Smith noted that the dog appeared to have stayed by the boy’s side for the entirety of the three days. A preliminary autopsy conducted by the coroner’s office has revealed no immediate signs of trauma or assault, though a definitive cause of death remains pending further toxicology and testing.

Legal Complications and Arrest

As the search for the missing child was underway, the investigation took a dark and complicated turn. Investigators discovered what they initially believed were precursor materials for explosive devices on the father’s property.

Jameson Kyle Boley, 40, was arrested on December 31 and currently faces several felony charges, including the unlawful manufacture of a destructive device and two counts of chemical endangerment of a child. Court documents allege that Boley possessed substances with the intent to manufacture a “destructive device or bacteriological weapon” and that children in the home were exposed to methamphetamines.

Sheriff Smith has been careful to distinguish these criminal charges from the circumstances of Johnathan’s death. “At this time, there is no evidence indicating foul play in the child’s death, and these charges should not be conflated with the search for Johnathan,” Smith stated during a press briefing, characterizing the two matters as separate investigations.

Boley is currently being held on a $400,000 cash-only bond, with a judge labeling him a “danger to the community.”

A Family Shattered

Johnathan and his six-year-old brother reside with their mother in Florida and were only in Alabama as part of a five-day holiday visitation agreement with their father. What was meant to be a seasonal celebration has instead left a family—and a community—in mourning.

The absence of an Amber Alert during the search sparked some public questioning, but authorities clarified that the legal criteria for such an alert—specifically evidence of an abduction—were not met at the time of the disappearance.

As the community of Jasper prepares to say goodbye to “John-John,” investigators say they will continue to follow every lead until they can provide the family with a final, official answer regarding the boy’s tragic end.
