Lucas Martin, a 21-year-old graduate from England, had just begun a new chapter in life after completing his international business degree at the University of Liverpool. But within days of feeling unwell, his promising future was tragically cut short.
On September 12, 2023, less than a week after he first began showing symptoms, Lucas passed away. What his family believed to be a mild case of freshers’ flu—a common ailment among students—turned out to be something far more dangerous: meningitis.
It all started with a headache and a fever. “We just thought it was freshers’ flu,” his brother, Connor, told the BBC. “If we had known more about meningitis, things might have been different.” Lucas spent most of his time resting in his room, his family assuming he was recovering from an ordinary virus.
But meningitis can often hide behind ordinary symptoms. Lucas didn’t have the telltale signs like a rash or sensitivity to light, which made it nearly impossible to recognize the danger. “He just had flu-like symptoms,” Connor recalled, his voice breaking.
