I’ll never forget that day at my baby shower, eight months pregnant and surrounded by people who genuinely cared for me. Everything looked perfect—the pastel decorations, the soft music, the cake with our daughter’s name beautifully written on top. It felt like a moment of joy I had been waiting for.

But the atmosphere shifted the moment my husband, Javier, arrived with his mother. I had always sensed a quiet tension whenever she was around; she never truly accepted me. Still, I hoped this day might bring a brief sense of peace.

During lunch, Javier suddenly stood up, his excitement seeming out of place. He announced that he had given the $10,000 we had saved for the delivery to his mother because, according to him, “she needed it more.” The room fell silent. My heart sank as I tried to comprehend why he had made such a huge decision without discussing it with me first.
