As the shocking video spread, outrage grew. Parents, players, and fans called for accountability and for a renewed focus on player safety in youth sports.
Courtney’s close friend, Gretta Volkenstein, who first shared the video online, described the hit as “purposeful and impulsive.”
“It was a split-second decision that can change somebody’s whole life,” she told MLive. “We need to teach kids responsibility — and hold people accountable for their actions.”
The community’s response has been overwhelming. Kalamazoo Central’s varsity team dedicated their next win — a 26–7 victory — to Colton. “The win was for Colton,” read the team’s emotional post on Facebook, echoing the feelings of solidarity across the region.
Meanwhile, the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) confirmed that both schools are addressing the incident internally. “We’ve talked to both schools, and they are resolving the issue,” a spokesperson said. Lakeshore officials declined to share details, citing privacy.
Online, however, frustration boiled over. One commenter wrote,
“The offending player should be suspended and the coaches investigated. That was a criminal-level hit.”
Another said,
“How could punishment even be unclear? That tackle would’ve drawn a fine in the NFL.”
Courtney remains focused on her son’s recovery but hopes his story serves as a warning. “Even years from now, a simple fall could paralyze him,” she said. “Parents need to know how dangerous this can be.”
On Monday, school officials confirmed that the player responsible will face disciplinary action, though details were not disclosed. Courtney shared that he will miss several games — a small but meaningful step toward accountability.
As Colton continues his long road to healing, one message rings clear from his family and supporters alike:
No game is worth a child’s future.
