Jimmy the Bear — A Gentle Giant with a Heart of Gold

At the Orphaned Wildlife Center in Middletown, New York, a compassionate couple has devoted their lives to rescuing and rehabilitating injured wild animals. Their 100-acre sanctuary has become a haven for many bears — from Kodiak and Syrian to American black bears — but none has captured hearts quite like Jimmy.

Jimmy, now 21 years old, has lived his entire life at the center after being born in captivity. Unlike other animals who are eventually released back into the wild, Jimmy’s upbringing made that impossible. Raised by humans since birth, he never developed the survival instincts needed to live independently. Yet, what he lacks in wilderness experience, he makes up for with warmth, affection, and a personality that’s endeared him to everyone who cares for him.

Towering at over nine feet tall and weighing more than 1,500 pounds, Jimmy is a breathtaking sight — but beneath his size lies a remarkably gentle spirit. He’s known for being friendly and calm, especially around his caretakers. “Jimmy doesn’t do any performing or tricks,” the center shared on Facebook. “He’s been with us since he was a cub.”

The Kowalcziks, who founded and run the sanctuary, have made it their mission to provide animals like Jimmy with a safe, nurturing space. Their goal has always been to return wildlife to nature whenever possible, but for those like Jimmy, who cannot survive on their own, the center becomes a forever home built on love and care.
