A Historic Visit Wrapped in Symbolism

Queen Camilla Honors Queen Elizabeth in a Graceful Black Veil During Historic Vatican Visit
On October 23, 2025, King Charles III and Queen Camilla made history with a solemn visit to the Vatican — the first time a British monarch openly prayed with a pope since Henry VIII’s split from Rome in 1534. The occasion was meant to mark reconciliation between the Anglican and Catholic churches, but it was Queen Camilla’s attire that stole the spotlight and set the internet abuzz.
Camilla arrived at the San Damaso courtyard in the State Bentley, wearing a traditional black outfit by designer Fiona Clare. Her ensemble followed strict Vatican protocol: modest black dress, long sleeves, and a lace mantilla — a shawl or veil worn over the head during papal audiences.
The 78-year-old queen accessorized with a striking Philip Treacy–designed mantilla, immediately drawing comparisons to the late Queen Elizabeth II’s visit to the Vatican decades earlier. The choice was deliberate — a visual echo of reverence and respect.
While some wondered why Camilla did not wear white, the answer lay in tradition. The Vatican’s privilegio del bianco (“privilege of the white”) allows only certain Catholic queens and princesses to wear white before the Pope. As a non-Catholic, Camilla followed the custom of mourning black — symbolizing humility and formality — as did generations of royal women before her.
Yet hidden in her look was a deeply personal touch: a Georgian cross-shaped “raspberry pip” brooch adorned with topaz and diamonds. Once belonging to Queen Elizabeth II, the piece was said to be among her favorites. Camilla has worn it several times as a quiet tribute to her late mother-in-law — a gesture of remembrance woven into every public appearance.
